28 Day Challenge to Give Back Spiritually

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 8.10.42 AMMany of you read and shared and commented on my most recent blog, Sometimes pastors don’t feel like smiling. I was so thankful the feelings expressed resonated with so many in ministry and were understood and appreciated by so many others who attend church.

That night as I laid in bed, my mind would not stop going around in circles: How can we practically show pastors and spiritual leaders our thanks and appreciation?

So I just decided to go for it!

I’m launching a 28 Day Challenge to give back spiritually to those who are our spiritual leaders!

Why is this such a big deal?

After all, what about the unwritten, somewhat subconscious social contract the church attendants have with their pastor? “I’ll give my tithe to this church as long as you meet all my spiritual needs and feed me.”

Never mind the fact that it should be the goal of every human to eventually know how to prepare a meal and feed themselves.

First of all, read the last blog post I mentioned for some insight into the weight and isolation pastors can sometimes feel as a result of their position.

Once you understand that, its easier to understand these passages from the Bible:

One who is taught the word must share all good things with the one who teaches. (Galatians 6:6)

We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. (1 Thessalonians 5:12-14)

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. (Hebrews 13:17)

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. (James 3:1)

This challenge will apply to more leaders in your life than just the lead pastor of your church. We tend to think a “pastor” is only the man who leads as the point person of a church. But the gift of pastoring truly refers to someone who shepherds and cares for the spiritual wellbeing of those entrusted to his/her care.

With that in mind, this challenge can be applied to your church’s lead pastor, pastoral staff, your small group leader, a spiritual mother or father in the faith, the person who led you in to relationship with the Lord for the first time – basically any spiritual leader or authority God has placed in your life to look out for your spiritual wellbeing in some way or another.

When thinking about all the spiritual influencers in your life, remember: the more responsibility one has, the more support and encouragement they need.

Honestly, as a leader it can be hard at times to even see if all the effort and striving is actually producing any fruit – the results are often under the surfaces or hard to see. This makes receiving the encouragement from those one serves even more of a blessing.

OK, so how do I get in on the challenge?

pabloIf you decide you’d like to challenge yourself to share more good things with your Truth-teachers, look for new ways to encourage spiritual leaders, and give back spiritually to those who have invested in you, this is what it will look like:

  • Daily Broadcasts: Every morning beginning February 1, I will broadcast the new challenge for the day on Periscope. Each day will be a new idea challenging you to show support to a spiritual leader in your life. Sometime these will be for a specific spiritual leader and sometimes it will be for the leader you choose to bless that day. The video will be available live as I broadcast and then on replay for 24 hours. Periscope: @Anna1Sadler.
  • Instagram Follow Up: I will attempt to share the challenge for the day on Instagram, but I’m not guaranteeing it, so I encourage you to still follow me on Periscope to make sure you’re in on every challenge. Instagram: @Anna1Sadler.
  • Community Conversation: We will also be facilitating community conversation in the comments of this blog here at callmewoman.org, on the Call Me Woman Facebook page, and by using the hashtag #LoveYourPastors. This way we can all check in to see who is taking on the daily challenges, how, and what great stories and encouragement we get from the results!

Help Others Get Involved!

If you’d especially love for the pastors and spiritual leaders at your church to feel the love, contact me about how we can get this challenge going around the circles of people at your church!

Here are some other ways to promote this challenge and get others on board to give back spiritually:

  1. Write your own post or broadcast – encourage others to join in on this important challenge to give back on your own social media! Nothing encourages people more than hearing it straight from someone they already know personally!
  2. Share this blog on your social media accounts.
  3. Follow on Periscope and invite followers to join in on the daily challenges.
  4. ‘Like’ Call Me Woman on Facebook to stay in the loop, share #LoveYourPastors challenge updates, and join in the community!
  5. Comment now with ideas you have already on how to show love and appreciation to your spiritual leaders!

Thank you so much for your decision to give back spiritually this month and show support and appreciation to the spiritual leaders in your life! I can’t wait to hear the amazing stories!
